Faith, Fear, and a Hospice

I was at the hospice with my fiance's dad when he died- James' siblings weren't able to get there in time, and James had used up his leave.

Watching Fred die, holding his hand and telling him (even though he was in a coma- there's evidence that sometimes they can hear you) that his children loved him and were proud of him, and that I was thankful having had the opportunity to know him, combing his hair and washing his face, sponging glycerine on his dry lips, trimming his fingernails, turning him in his bed... sitting up all night next to the bed with his hand in mine that last few hours...I seriously doubt that most of the protestors outside the hospice where Terri Schiavo is spending her last hours would be capable of doing these things. They lack empathy and compassion, and they lack an understanding of death.

Maybe a less-than-serious reference, but one of the most profound statements in the corpus of Harry Potter, is one in the first book, by Albus Dumbledore:

"After all, to the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure."

Lacking a true understanding of death, they fear it, and I think much of the rationale (such as it is) behind the 'right-to-life'is that fear- the 'Hamlet syndrome', that undiscovered country.

As to Terri, I think that they are forgetting what Paul said- To live, is Christ; to die, is gain- Keeping her here only keeps her trapped in a body that has no volition, with a brain that cannot even think to praise God. If they really trusted God, they would have no problem with letting Terri go.

They've figured out that making a spectacle of themselves get press coverage, which (they think) gets their message out. It may get the message out, but the message may be more of 'we're a bunch of loonies' than one of 'we really love God and want to serve Him wholly'.

To my view the histrionics only show their lack of faith.

Dad had a quiet passage, little expressed pain, little time actually in the dying process. What was there to fear? He went to another adventure. And that is really all that any of us can ask for.
